The first place to begin with is dumbbells and a barbell. These will allow you to work your arms and chest in a wide variety of ways, and you can keep buying additional weights as your strength grows. Make sure you buy the kind that are coated in rubber. They will last longer.

A pullup bar is another great purchase. There are several ways you can work your arms and chest with this bar and, once you get your ab muscles in better shape, you can even do upside down sit ups on it.

A jump rope is great for your cardio vascular system and for your legs. Even your arms get a work out jumping rope. What you will probably find out is that this was easy as a kid but it is quite hard to do now. Be prepared to have to work at it to jump rope once again.

A rowing machine is a great exercise machine to get because so many of your muscles are worked on this machine. Your arms and legs get a great workout, as does your cardiovascular system. A sit up ball is a great idea as well. This is a great way to do crunches, and takes a lot of pressure off of your back, protecting it from injury. A step platform is also a good idea. Many think of this in relation to aerobics, but it can be used for a lot more than that, including dips, squats and thrusts. You can work a lot of different muscles groups with it, and use it for aerobics.

A stereo system in your gym area is a must. Truthfully, nothing will get you working harder than some tunes you can work out to. Get a good system that you can connect your smartphone to or that you can run a bunch of songs and then just rock out while you work out.
